Mayweather vs. McGregor PPV at Kia Theatre
Date Posted: August 25, 2017

UFC world champion Conor McGregor and undefeated pound-for-pound world boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. will clash in a much-awaited duel at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this Saturday, Aug 26 at 9 p.m. (Sunday, Aug. 27, 9 a.m. Manila Time).

While a throng of MMA and boxing fanatics are expected to descend upon the so-called “Sin City,” local fans wanting to get in on the action may do so, Vegas style, courtesy of a giant screen and live HD broadcast of the fight Sunday morning. Sports fanatics can enjoy the Aug. 27 9 a.m. Pay-Per-View screening of the fight at Kia Theatre in Araneta Center, Quezon City. Tickets to the PPV come in affordable rates, with promo package choices for VIP and Loge seats that include food and drinks, through Ticketnet.

It is said that the seed was planted for this year’s most anticipated sporting match back in April 2015 when, in an Esquire article by writer Chris Jones, then-rising MMA fighter McGregor was quoted, “If I fought Floyd, I would kill him in less than 30 seconds.”

That quote from the UFC champ spread like wildfire. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe credited social media’s role in getting this fight set up. Adding fuel to the fire, Mayweather even tweeted a fake poster in jest that read “Mayweather Conor Live on Pay-Per-View” early last year. Fans picked it up and talked relentlessly online about a supposed rivalry between Mayweather and McGregor. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mayweather’s PPV joke has come true and you don’t have to fly to the US to witness this unbelievable event. For inquiries and tickets to the PPV, call 911-5555, check out www.ticketnet.com.ph, or visit any of the Ticketnet outlets, including the new one on Level 1 Robinson’s Department Store in Galleria.

Binibining Pilipinas Charities (BPCI) chair Mrs. Stella Marquez-Araneta, together with Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters, Bb. Pilipinas International Mariel De Leon, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas, Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Elizabeth Clenci, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Katarina Rodriguez, and Bb. Pilipinas Globe Nelda Ibe, visited over 200 wounded soldiers at the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center today, July 20, 2017.

Mrs. Araneta gave a few words at the start of the program, acknowledging the soldiers for their bravery and courage. After the welcome remarks by Mrs. Araneta, Bb. Pilipinas International Mariel De Leon serenaded the audience with a couple of songs – one being Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” – accompanied by Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Elizabeth Clenci on acoustic guitar.

The performance was followed by a short, inspiring talk by retired General Mr. Art Orticio, Program Consultant from Makati Medical Center Foundation.

Mrs. Araneta received a token of appreciation from the AFP and Makati Medical Center Foundation for her charitable contributions to the institution. With the six Queens, she then proceeded to the Heroes’ Ward where the wounded soldiers are confined, and also checked in on patients in other wards.

Ms. Marge Barro, Executive Director of Makati Medical Center Foundation expressed her gratitude towards BPCI. “It’s been several years that we’ve (started the) partnership (between) the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated and Makati Medical Center Foundation, she began. She noted that the visits “touch (the hearts) of not just the soldiers but also the Binibining Pilipinas Queens.”

This most recent visit was made more memorable because some of the patients confined at the hospital were heroes from the Marawi crisis, according to Barro. “There’s no better time to be here to show your support and presence.”

The BPCI’s relevance as an organization is anchored not just on the quest for True Filipina Beauty. Its main thrust lies in providing meaningful opportunities for the women to be able to make a difference in the world, inspired by an unwavering commitment to various humanitarian causes.

The adjustable pedestals can be tilted at various angles for various creative tasks like reading, drawing, coloring, writing, stamping, and solving puzzles, among many. The sculpture’s “living design” allows it to be moved to various locations.

Niño Muhlach’s son, Alonzo, was also at the event with his family.

This VIP red carpet screening is just one of the many treats Gateway Cineplex has been giving its loyal customers. Last month, it held a kiddie art workshop and meet-and-greet with Gru and Stuart from “Despicable Me 3.” Spider-man also paid the cinema a visit in June, said hi to fans in a short event at the Gateway Activity Area, and even took a jeepney ride outside the Smart Araneta Coliseum. He seeks out Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) to help him get back in the game and prove that he is still the best race car in the tracks.

“It was a very heart-warming story,” Ruby says after seeing the movie. “We always play this (game) in ‘Bulaga’ – (name) unexpected movies that will make you tear up. I will say this now; ‘Cars 3’ is one of them. It made me cry. Why? You have to watch it!” Alonzo, meanwhile, has his favorite scene as well, and wastes no time telling everyone, “Everybody please watch ‘Cars 3’ in Gateway! I enjoyed it... so have fun.” The child star also adds, “It’s the best movie ever!”

Binibini Queens headline CANVAS for book giving activity
Date Posted: June 21, 2017

Binibining Pilipinas International Mariel De Leon and Binibining Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas with the kids at the CANVAS book giving activity

Binibining Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas and Binibining Pilipinas International Mariel De Leon took time out of their busy schedules to visit over 100 children for The Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development’s (CANVAS) book giving activity at the SB TESDA Building along C.P. Garcia in Diliman, Quezon City.

The beauties enchanted the spellbound children during the storytelling portion, where they read CANVAS’ latest children’s book entitled “Panyaan: Three Tales of the Tagbanua.”

Illustrated by artist Sergio “Serge” Bumatay III in acrylic, Rhandee Garlitos authored the first two stories in the book, entitled “The Secret of the Sacred Islet,” and “Apong Dakulo” (Great Elder). The Bb. Pilipinas queens read the third story called “Pablo and the Zebra” by Annette A. Ferrer.

After a short introduction from writer Ms. Annette A. Ferrer of CANVAS, the two queens took turns reading to the kids, and showing the enlarged artwork from the book. The wide-eyed kids had a great time hearing the story of Pablo and his grandfather, who does not like zebras. Each child received a copy of “Panyaan,” and Pizza Hut provided lunch for everyone after the event.

CANVAS has been working with foundations under the Araneta Group, including the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) since 2014. It has also donated books to the beneficiaries of the J. Amado Araneta Foundation (JAAF), the CSR arm of the Araneta Group, in Visayas.

CANVAS is a non-profit organization that works with the creative community to promote children’s literacy, and appreciation for Philippine art, culture and the environment. It publishes children’s books through the Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Writing Competition, and donates proceeds from sales to underprivileged communities.

Founded by Stella Márquez Araneta, the Binibining Pilipinas pageant is BPCI’s primary instrument in nation-building efforts. Every year, BPCI partners with various private, as well as public organizations for fund-raising and humanitarian missions that benefit marginalized sectors of society. Binibining Pilipinas pageant participants and title holders have also been in the forefront of BPCI charity activities.

The beautiful candidates vying for titles at this year’s Binibining Pilipinas 2017 pageant wowed members of the press and VIP guests during the much-awaited Press Presentation held at the Monet 2 Ballroom of Novotel Manila Araneta Center on March 22.

Stunning everyone in their neon swimsuits designed by Jeffrey Rogador, the candidates charmed the illustrious guests with their confidence and stage presence. The ladies also let their personalities show with a brief introduction and a strut on stage.

This year’s exciting roster consists of local pageant winners, degree holders from top schools, honor graduates, artists, sports and fashion enthusiasts, and working professionals who excel in their respective fields. Representing various provinces in the country, the official candidates bested hundreds of aspirants that went through rigorous screenings and interviews in January.

It’s going to be a tough competition this year following the stellar successes of the reigning beauty queens. The historic win of Pia Wurtzbach at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant became a shining moment for our country. The winning streak also continued with Anne Colis bagging the Miss Globe 2015 title; and the following year, Kylie Verzosa winning the Miss International 2016 title.

The pageant fever was further fanned by the impressive showing of Parul Shah, Miss Grand International 2015 3rd Runner-up; Christy McGarry, Miss Intercontinental 2015 1st Runner-up; Rogelie Catacutan, Miss Supranational 2015 semifinalist; Nicole Codroves, Miss Grand International 2016 1st Runner-up; Nichole Manalo, and Miss Globe 2016 3rd Runner-up.

Traditionally, the media gets to vote for the Miss Photogenic among the roster of Binibining Pilipinas candidates. This year, the pageant opens this to the public and gives them three ways to vote for their favorite beauty. The total votes are then added to the media’s votes to find this year’s Miss Photogenic.

Big Dome lights blue for autism awareness

Just like the Empire State Building in New York, the CN Tower in Canada, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and even Niagara Falls, the Philippines’ iconic entertainment and sports landmark fondly called the Big Dome has been lit up blue for a good cause.

On April 3, the Smart Araneta Coliseum’s main gate was lit blue in line with the global campaign to support World Autism Awareness Day (April 2 in the US), declared by the United Nations. With April being the World Autism Awareness Month, the “Big Dome Lights Blue” project supports the global autism community – a symbolic gesture behind a bigger aim to promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion of people with autism.

“Big Dome Lights Blue” was a joint effort of the Araneta Center, Inc., the Smart Araneta Coliseum, and the J. Amado Araneta Foundation, Inc. (JAAF), in partnership with the Philippine Associate for Citizens with Developmental and Learning Disabilities, Inc. (PACDLD). Prior to the ceremonial lighting of the Big Dome’s main gate, PACDLD held its first-ever Autism Advocate Awards at the Gateway Gallery on the 5th level of Gateway Tower, in recognition of several medical professionals and parents that have made advances and contributions to Autism Awareness and Advocacy in the Philippines.

A short program followed at the gate of the Smart Araneta Coliseum. PACDLD co-founder Ms. Felicite Jean Gonzales said a few words, and introduced special guest Mr. Rizalio Sanchesz, the Chief of Information, Education and Communications Division of the National Council on Disability Affairs, who also delivered a message of gratitude for the “Big Dome Lights Blue” effort.

Before the Big Dome was bathed in blue lights, a handful of children with autism and other learning disabilities, collectively called Kontra Gapi Plus, performed using Filipino ethnic instruments. Trained in art and performance by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the wonderful kids showed the audience that no disabilities could hamper their leading productive and creative lives. Their joyful performance and demeanor onstage proved an inspiration to all.

“We are proud to support this global awareness movement and the advocacy of acceptance of people living with autism,” noted Ms. Diane Romero, the Executive Director of JAAF, in her speech during the event. “Our founder, Don Amado Araneta, has always envisioned the Center to be a place that welcomes all, and our participation here signifies our commitment to his vision. Today, we light up the main entrance of the Big Dome blue to signify our belief that we can be partners to tireless groups like the PACDLD and the Autism Advocate Awardees in the movement towards acceptance, appreciation and protection of children and individuals living with autism and other learning disabilities.”

“Big Dome Lights Blue” is just one of the CSR activities of the Araneta Group in support of autism awareness. Future plans include activities in partnership with groups like PACDLD in disseminating information on autism, holding art and crafts workshops for kids with autism, and training frontliners in recognizing and giving proper response to people with autism.

Gateway Gallery launches first Philippine history exhibit in augmented reality

(From right) Miss Globe 2016 3rd runner up Nichole Manalo, Miss Grand International 2016 1st runnerup Nicole Cordoves, and Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa try the augmented reality feature during Gateway Gallery’s “SiningLakbay: Philippine History in Augmented Reality” launch on Feb. 22.

Gateway Gallery celebrated the second year of its “SiningSaysay: Philippine History in Art” exhibit by launching a digital feature that utilizes augmented reality (AR) to recount Philippine history and make it more interesting to an increasingly digital-savvy generation.

On February 22, the Gallery launched “SiningLakbay: Philippine History in Augmented Reality,” a project that marries art and technology to give visitors a more enhanced experience of its long-term collection.

The event was attended by guests of honor like Mrs. Judy Araneta Roxas, president of the J. Amado Araneta Foundation president and vice chairman of the Araneta Center, Inc; Manolo Roxas, grandson of Philippine president Manuel L. Roxas; Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc chairperson Stella Marquez-Araneta; esteemed painter Betsy Westendorp; Divina Gracia Pascua, OIC of the Culture and Tourism Affairs Office; Dinky Soliman, former DSWD secretary; as well as BInibini queens Nicole Codroves, Jennifer Hammond, and Nichole Manalo; and 2016 Miss International Kylie Verzosa.

During the event, guests were able to test the AR feature and were encouraged to go around the Gallery to experience it first-hand. Ten DOT-accredited history teachers from various Quezon City schools served as Gallery Guides.

The “SiningLakbay” project is a product of careful and creative implementation spearheaded by artists, filmmakers, historians, curators, editors, and technology providers.

It aims to be a platform for gallery guests to have a more enriched experience of “SiningSaysay,” a collection of 30 large history paintings that resulted from the collaboration between the University of the Philippines and the Araneta Center. “SiningLakbay” also aims to create awareness of history among the youth by appealing to their interest in digital technology.

To Gallery visitors a more immersive experience, 10 paintings from the collection will “come to life” on their WIFI-enabled digital devices like mobile phones and tablets using the Layar app that can be downloaded for free (on iOS and Android). Users will then be able to scan the selected paintings on their device to watch the video and hear the narration on chapters of Philippine history.

The videos are accurate historical accounts of events depicted in the paintings. Each video lasts roughly three minutes, with the whole tour lasting about 30 minutes total. This launch is just the first phase of an even bigger project of making all 30 paintings in the collection AR-enabled.

With its vision to make arts and culture accessible to ordinary Filipinos, Gateway Gallery will continue programs that introduce arts to young children, holding art workshops for hobbyists, portrait sketching sessions for professional artists, and hosting talks by artists and historians.

Close to 400 local and foreign cockers and breeders tackle their assigned 2-cock elims on Jan. 23, 24 and 25.

Hostilities continue on Jan. 26, 27 and 28 with the 3-cock semifinals.

Participants with 3, 3.5 and 4 points will have their final rounds (4-cock) on Jan. 29, 30 and 31.

The grand finals (4-cock ) on Feb. 1 is reserved for those with 4.5 and 5 points.

The Philippine contingent, led by defending champion Magno Lim of Isabela, will be challenged by entries from United States, Mexico, Kuwait, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Guam, Saipan and Vietnam.

The rueda is almost ready and the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum will once again be rocked by the most intense battles among the top gamefowl breeds from all over the world in the prestigious 2017 World Slasher Cup.Slated from January 23 to February 1, this year’s 9-cock invitational derby is still the most awaited competition among breeders and enthusiasts.

Over 300 entries will vie for the Slasher title in the 9-day global spectacle. Touted as the “Olympics of Cockfighting,” contenders with the finest winged-warriors will come from the US, Kuwait, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

The beauty of this gentleman’s sport is that the odds are never truly set. Though people pick their bets between “meron” or “wala,” the tide can turn in a blink of an eye.

2016’s World Slasher Cup II champ Magno Lim tells Pit Games magazine, “That’s why I enjoy cockfighting... I’ve seen the seemingly impossible happen before my eyes. For instance, just when I begin thinking I’m about to lose my fight, something quickly changes and the referee calls it in my favor.”

The 2-cock eliminations will start on the January 23 for a three-day smackdown until January 25. Qualifiers will then move on to the 3-cock semi-finals set on January 26 to 29. Individual entries with a score of 3.5 or 4 points will compete in the 4-cock pre-finals from January 29 to 31. Undefeated entries with a score of 4.5 or 5 points earn the chance to be named this year’s World Slasher Cup champion at the grand finals on February 1.

Lim’s entry under the banner MLG 63, with his teammate Gary Tesorero, won the pot money and the prestige at the 2016 World Slasher Cup II in May last year.

Earlier, 2016 World Slasher Cup 1 yielded tie champions, namely the entries from Blueblade Farms AA, and Phoenix II (the team composed of Mario Villamor, Ed Aparri and Art de Castro).

Jumping on a trampoline may not be the most exciting thing you can do. Extreme sports, however, has changed what people normally do when they bounce around on trampolines and turned it into an art form. Not only that, what is called the Wall Trampoline continues to take on a new life – in the circus!

“Le Grand Cirque,” Araneta Center’s Christmas offering this December, will let local audiences witness and experience the thrill of seeing gymnasts practically “walk on walls.” Despite the freestyle feel of the Trampoline Wall act, performers have added more tricks to make it more exciting for audiences. In “Le Grand Cirque,” expect to see a jumper rise in the air, fall on his back onto the trampoline below, bounce back up and do a flip before he touches the wall on his way down. Or he may do walking or running motions on the vertical surface, possibly giving Spider-man a run for his money.

It may all look simple, aside from a lot of fun, but gymnasts who do this are hoping wall trampoline becomes an official contest in the X-Games. Such is the demand of this act: The gravity-defying performance consists of a gymnast using the high-rebound capabilities of a performance trampoline to executed perfectly timed flips, twists and other tricks. Part gymnastics and part parkour, a wall walker notes one has to always be aware of where the wall is to do it right.

The Wall Trampoline, headlined by a performer from Ukraine, is one of the exciting acts in “Le Grand Cirque,” coming for the first-time to the Philippines in a series of shows at the Smart Araneta Coliseum from December 25 to January 3, 2017. Enjoyed by thousands with performances in the US, UK and even Canada, Filipino audiences this time will feel the excitement in every breathtaking show. Reasonably priced compared to most Christmas offerings, this is the perfect show for the whole family or the whole barkada.

Following the iconic lighting of the giant Christmas tree earlier this month, the Araneta Center continues the tradition of ushering in the holiday season with the annual Belen Lighting ceremony held on Nov. 11 at the McArthur Drive, near Farmers Market.

The solemn event was attended by Vice Chairman of Araneta Center, Inc. Judy Roxas, Quezon City government officials, and other Araneta Center executives who participated in the ceremonial lighting of the life-size nativity tableau. The traditional Belen lighting started in 1991 and has become a local attraction at the Center during Yuletide season. It serves as a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, which is the birth of Jesus Christ.

The traditional Belen Lighting began with a ceremonial mass led by Msgr. Alfonso Bugaoan, Jr. Edray Teodoro of the “Voice Kids Philippines” also performed for the audience. EARIST Chorale also sang famous Christmas songs, and an awesome fireworks display ended the evening on a festive note.

The Belen lighting is just the beginning of a slew of events and activities this Christmas. On December 1 until Dec 25, various chorale groups will grace the activity areas of the New Farmers Plaza, Ali Mall, and Gateway to regale crowds with Christmas carols every day starting at 4pm.

Exciting Santa Meet & Greet events will also take place every weekend of December from 3pm to 7pm at Araneta Center malls while Fireworks Displays will be held every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of December up to January 3 at 7 pm at the Gateway Food Park.

After her remarkable performance at the recently concluded Miss Grand International pageant in Las Vegas last month, Miss Grand International 1st Runner-Up Nicole Cordoves was feted by the media and other Binibining Pilipinas winners in a press conference on Nov 10 at Versailles Tent of Novotel Manila Araneta Center.

A confident and elated Nicole greeted the press, thanking them for supporting her while she was abroad, living her dream of representing the country. Nicole said that it was the support of the Filipinos here and abroad that boosted her confidence.

During the pageant’s speech portion, where finalists were asked how they intend to “Stop the War and Violence,” Nicole’s speech focused on how children should not risk their lives for us amid violence and war. She enjoined everyone to build a world that will allow them to dream, grow, and to live.

Nicole said she enjoyed every moment she spent with over 70 beautiful candidates from various countries. “My favorite part would be talking to all the girls there because everyone had their personal advocacies. And for them to share that and share their life experiences that led them to those advocacies, nothing can replace that.“

The title may have gone to Ariska Putri Pertiwi of Indonesia during the pageant night on October 25, but Nicole emerged a winner nonetheless, as the whole experience contributed to her growth as a person. “I would describe my experience as transcending because I really went over and beyond myself. I turned my weaknesses into strength. That’s when I realized you can be anything you want to be as long as you do it on purpose.”

While her Q&A answer elicited jeers from the audience, Nicole had no regrets about it. “At that point it was more than answering a question. It’s something that really reinforced who I am.” She also shared how happy she was to receive good feedback about her walk that night, which she did not expect to become one of her strengths.

Araneta Center, together with Courageous Light, remembers the purposeful life of the late Caitlin Lucas, also known as Courageous Catie, with a photo exhibit entitled “A Journey of Hope.” The ongoing exhibit will run until September 3, 2016 at the Gateway Mall Activity Center and Gateway Gallery.

Netizens remember Caitie as the courageous three-year-old who battled juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), a rare cancer of the blood affecting infants and toddlers. Before her untimely death, Catie captured the hearts of thousands when her mom started the Facebook page “Courageous Caitie,” the young girl’s story of strength and faith.

The grand launch of the exhibit fell on what would have been Caitie’s 4th birthday on August 6 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gateway Mall Activity Center.

During the launch, kids were able to participate in fun and creative activities with their families in the crafts area with the Mosaic, Light and Verse Crafts and Painting, and Sand Painting booths. Following those activities with kids, mall goers will also be inspired by photos on display until Friday, August 12 before the exhibit moves to the Gateway Gallery at the 5th Floor of the Gateway Tower just beside the mall.

The Journey of Hope continues with other activities that will bring families closer together. Enjoy bonding sessions with your loved ones during the Parent and Child workshops to be held on August 13, 20, 27 and September 3 at 1 p.m. at the Gateway Gallery. To help a good cause, you may also donate or pledge a donation to Courageous Light.

Courageous Light is a movement headed by Catie’s parents Jayjay and Feliz that aims to help families of children with illnesses.

Jay Jay and Feliz Lucas, with their son Ethan, light candles to celebrate the 4th birth anniversary of their late family member Caitie, known to many as “Courageous Caitie,” at the Gateway Mall on August 6. Caitie was the 3-year old girl who passed away earlier this year after battling a rare form of leukemia. Her story of unwavering courage became viral through social media and touched the hearts of concerned netizens. The celebration coincides with the launch of “A Journey of Hope” – a month-long event filled with fun family activities which include the Courageous Caitie photo exhibit, parenting talks, and kids’ workshops from August 7 to September 3. “A Journey of Hope” is a joint collaboration of the Courageous Light movement and the J. Amado Araneta Foundation.

World-renowned platinum recording artist Brian McKnight returns to Manila for a night of unforgettable music on June 20, 8PM, at the Kia Theatre.

Filipinos easily became fans of the musician thanks to his collection of hits like “Back at One” and “One Last Cry,” to name a few.

The multi-awarded singer-songwriter and producer is currently on a world tour to promote his 13th studio album “Better,” which he considers to be a throwback to the albums he made early in his career.

With 16 albums to date, McKnight returns to his soulful roots on his new record; featuring 12 relatable and touching songs. He worked with Hawaiian vocalist Kimie Miner and rapper Glasses Moses on the new project, which also includes long-time guitarists Chris Loftin and Tyrone Chase.

“I’m taking it back to basics,” Brian explains. “Creating music like we did 20 years ago – completely organic, all real instruments. The truth is, I’m in love and love makes us better, it makes us come alive, and I wanted to convey that through this album in a very relatable, authentic way.”

The title track of his album “Better” has received positive reviews online since it was released on February 26. It includes tracks like “Just Enough,” and “Get U Into My Life,” among others.

McKnight’s musical career began in 1992 when he released his eponymous album, which then featured his highest-charting single “One Last Cry.” His video for “Anytime” was nominated for Best Male Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

Along with 16 Grammy Awards nominations, McKnight has also been the recipient of Soul Train Awards, American Music Awards and Billboard Songwriter of The Year. His most notable album, Back At One, sold over 3 Million copies.

His passion to create new sound also allowed him to collaborate with famous artists in the industry, among them Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, P-Diddy, Christina Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Vanessa Williams, Willie Nelson, and Kenny G. This allowed him to constantly evolve and improve as an artist.
